Wines

Cotes de Duras Region

The Côtes de Duras vineyards is one of the three Appellations d´Origine Contrôlée in the Lot-et-Garonne region in Aquitaine. The Appellation extends over approximately 1,800 hectares; it occupies the plateaux and the slopes south of the hillsides overlooking the Dropt valley, to the north-east of the department. White, red and rosé wines are  produced from characteristic native soil in which  molassic soils as well as limestone or clay-limestone hillsides predominate. Under the influence of an oceanic climate, Duras vineyards benefit from hotter, dryer weather than its Bordeaux neighbour, enabling the wines to mature in the best of conditions.

Chateau Lavanau

Chateau Lavanau is located in the historic Loubes vineyard, around 70 miles from Bordeaux.
The vineyard, established in the 1920’s, sits astride chalky, sun facing slopes, known locally as the “Cradle of Duras”. Being at the highest point in the Lot et Garonne, the Chateau has a very special terroir which has produced many award winning wines.

The wines of the area have always been prized. So prized in fact, that Lydia (once mistress to the Sun King, Louis XIV) was prepared to stop at nothing to aquire them. She organised the murder of the Abbot whose order had worked the vines for 300 years, expelled the monks annexed their land, in and grabbed the vines for herself. So when we say the wines are to die for, we mean it literally.

The estate is owned and run since 2005 by the Uhart family who have improved the viticutural practice, rebuilt the winery and equiped it with modern thermo regulation technology.

Chateau Lavanau recently got together with its neighbours, Michel and Ben Bouchereau at Chateau Grand Terrier des Eyriaux. Michel and Ben produce excellent Duras, Bordeaux and St Emillion wines, so it seemed logical to use their skills and continue to improve the quality of Chateau Lavanau by selecting the best Duras grapes from both estates. Michel and Ben have now become the wine makers at Chateau Lavanau, whilst Paul Uhart ensures that the final product remains true to Lavanau’s award winning heritage.

Our associaton, means that we can now offer even higher quality and a greater variety of wines from the Bordeaux and Duras regions.

Red

Merlot 09

Chateau Lavanau Merlot 2009
This red wine has earned enduring affection among our customers in North America and Europe. It has superb rounded flavours, and yet is subtle enough to allow the taste of the fruit to come through without drowning it in tannins. The wine owes its success to the superb terroir, with its vines growing on land that has been qualified as “equal to many of France’s Grands Crûs” and its slopes providing the best possible exposure to the sun.
Tasting:
Lots of black plum and bilberry showing on the nose. Starts with a good weight of sweet fruit but the mid palate is quite tight and has a structured firmness. The tannins feel ripe and the sweetness returns leaving lots of ripe feeling fruit on the finish. (Notes by Derek Smedley, Master of wine)
Vinification:
The grapes are harvested at the peak of maturity (when touching the grape stains the hand brown). At the winery, they are sorted, de-stalked and deposited in fermentation tanks where they macerate at a constant temperature, to extract maximum flavour and aroma. Grapes: Merlot 85% Cabernet Franc / Cabernet Sauvignon 15%.

Esprit Roc du Charron 2006

Tasting:
The nose is gentle hints of blackberry and blackcurrent. In the mouth a soft amalgamation of dark fruits, gradually becomes more ebullient then dies away to return with a pleasing mix of fruity balanced flavors.
Vinification:
After maceration the wine is produced in tanks with an emphasis on fruit extraction matured for three years – it is then barreled in French oak just long enough to harmonize and balance the wine. Grapes: Merlot 55% – Cabernet Franc / Cabernet Sauvignon 45%.

The first rule of wine making is that the best grapes make the best wine.
Tasting:
Ruby red in colour, expressive on the nose with depth and complexity, enhanced by the light vanilla flavors from oaking. Well rounded fruit blackberry and cassis with subtle soft tannins and a hint of spice.

Berries, liquerice and cassis aromas. Full bodied and muscular with intense black cherry flavors. Should age well.
Vinification:
Prior to maceration, the grapes are broken to allow the juice to flow. Juice pips and skins are then pumped to tanks where the temperature controls slow the rate of fermentation. When complete the temperature of the wine is raised slightly to set off a secondary fermentation which transforms malic into lactic acids. At least a year later after juicing and maturing the wine is ready for the bottle. Grapes: Melot 80% – Cabernet Franc 20%.
